What is the Fear & Greed Index?
The Fear & Greed Index measures the emotions driving the crypto market on a scale from 0 to 100. Low values mean investors are fearful — often a sign the market is oversold. High values mean investors are greedy — often a sign it is due for a correction.
The idea is contrarian: be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful. Extreme Fear can flag a buying opportunity, while Extreme Greed can warn that the market is overheated.
How to read the scale
The 0–100 range is split into five zones:
Extreme Fear0–24
Investors are very worried. Historically these levels have often marked local bottoms.
Fear25–44
Caution dominates and the market leans bearish.
Neutral45–54
Balance between buyers and sellers, with no clear emotional bias.
Greed55–74Right now
Optimism grows and buyers are in control.
Extreme Greed75–100
Euphoria. Historically these levels have often preceded corrections.
How the index is calculated
The crypto Fear & Greed Index blends several market signals into one number:
Volatility — 25%
Current volatility and drawdowns versus recent averages. Unusual spikes signal fear.
Momentum & volume — 25%
Buying volume and momentum compared to typical levels. Sustained buying signals greed.
Social media — 15%
Sentiment and engagement across crypto posts and hashtags.
Surveys — 15%
Periodic polls of market participants (currently paused by the data provider).
Bitcoin dominance — 10%
A rising BTC share often reflects fear rotating out of altcoins.
Search trends — 10%
Google Trends data for crypto-related search queries.
30-day history
Tracking the index over time matters more than any single reading. A move from Extreme Fear toward Greed can mark a trend change, while a stall in Extreme Greed can warn of a top.
Frequently asked questions
- How often does the index update?
- Once a day. EIDEX refreshes the value regularly, so the number you see reflects the latest daily reading.
- Is a low value good or bad?
- It depends on your strategy. Extreme Fear (a low value) is often viewed as a potential buying opportunity by contrarian investors, but it is a sentiment gauge, not a guarantee.
- Should I trade based on the index alone?
- No. The index is one input among many. Combine it with price action, fundamentals and risk management — never rely on a single indicator.
- Where does the data come from?
- The crypto Fear & Greed Index is sourced from alternative.me, which aggregates volatility, momentum, social media, Bitcoin dominance and search-trend signals.
- Is this the same as the stock-market Fear & Greed Index?
- No. CNN publishes a separate index for equities. This page tracks the crypto-specific version.
